Well - It's day two and the demolition continues. While yesterday seemed drastic - it can't hold a candle to today's action. The roofs and walls come tumbling down.
The first hint of things to come was the stripping of the roof. All the multiple layers of accumulated shingles and wood shake are shaved clean. Down to the bare plywood. Thankfully this side of the roof is in pretty good shape.
But yet the other side still had a wood shake base. Some funky haphazard wood chunks nailed together in place of plywood. Then the shingles were nailed to that.
Here is a hearty pile of old shake roofing. Anyone have a match?
Here is a view looking down the driveway. The house still looking fairly normal.
Looking out of the former decking. Minus our Tangerine, Lime and
Pomegranate tree.
This is looking from our kitchen, past the former homework room, into the 3rd bedroom. Shay used it as his homework room and this would have been his bedroom.
The third bedroom - looking towards the bathroom. Ah, the memories!
Another view into the 3rd bedroom looking towards the kitchen.
Here is the custom gate Sheryl and her Dad made to keep our then young toddlers from wandering out of the yard. It has held up amazing well over the years and still quite solid. It would swing out and latch to the garage keeping the kids safe in the yard.
On the driveway - looking into the garage.
Looking into what used to be the laundry room.
This is actually the original front of the garage. All these years it has been hidden behind the newer garage facade. It had a classic wood detailed venting we kept in hopes of reusing it in the new construction.
We are looking west out over our brick patio. That will be disappearing soon as well!
I guess our yard has looked better...
There goes the Office/Guest house. At this point the property looked like it was bombed in WW2. Wood and debris scattered everywhere. Very surreal to look at something you spent 15 years of your life - now laying in ruins.
I thought California had a low cost, special home demolition event called, oh what was it, oh yah an earthquake. I heard it's much quicker, cheaper and your insurance pays for the remodel.
ReplyDeleteOh I know you already went through that arduous zoning process, but maybe next time.
HOLY SH!T!! This is absolutely fascinating, thanks for putting it up. Can't imagine what it must be like, even though I've logged a few hours in that house m'self over the years. Great stuff!
